Reference in the Quran or Hadith

Barley is mentioned in many hadiths about foods and zakat-ul-fitr (the obligatory alms Muslims pay by the end of the month of Ramadan). Abdullah ibn Omar, may Allah be pleased with them both, reported: “The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, enjoined that zakat-ul-fitr shall be one sa’ (2-4 litres) of palm dates or barley and shall be payable on every Muslim slave or free person; male or female; and young or adult person, and he ordained it to be paid before people go out for the Prayer of Eid-ul-Fitr. (Sahih -Al-Bukhari, The Book of Zakah (Poor Dues))
