Kohl is a powder made of antimony and used as cure for eyes. A kohl jar is made of glass or metal and consists of two parts: a thin rod to apply kohl to the eye and the jar containing kohl.
Reference in the Quran or Hadith
On the authority of Ibn-Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said: “Use antimony as kohl for your eyes, as it strengthens eyesight and grows eye lashes.” (Takhrij Sharh Al-Sunnah, Shu’aib Al-Arna’ut)
