Reference in the Quran or Hadith

The thorntree is mentioned in the hadith about the two spouses of Prophet Muhammad, Mothers of the Believers, who collaborated against him. Umar said: “I narrated to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, that story, and when I reached the part of Um-Salama, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, smiled. He was lying on a mat made of palm tree leaves with nothing between him and the mat. Underneath his head there was a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibers, and leaves of a thorntree were piled at his feet, and above his head hung a few water skins. On seeing the marks of the mat imprinted on his side, I wept. He asked, “Why do you weep?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, Caesar and Khosrow live in luxury [though disbelievers], and you are the Messenger of Allah [yet you lead a harsh life].” He said, “Does it not please you that they have the enjoyment of this worldly life while we will have [eternal bliss] in the Hereafter?” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, The Prophet’s Commentary on the Quran)
