Ali bin Jassim Secondary School participates in the “Young Botanist”
Sunday, May 1, 2016: the Qur’anic Botanic Garden, member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, received a delegation of students from Ali bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Thani Secondary Independent School for Boys, in a site visit to the Nursery and the Herbarium of the garden. The site visit comes within the "Young Botanist" educational program, which in turn aims to promote the students' scientific competence and qualification of high school to work as researchers interested in the conservation and propagation of plants.
The students explored the QF Nursery accompanied by the specialist researchers of the Qur'anic Botanic Garden to learn about the biological processes that take place inside the greenhouses for the conservation and propagation of plants. The students identified the different nursery systems of irrigation, refrigeration and other operating systems.
The students visited the QBG Herbarium and performed a laboratory study on the “Safflower” plant, which is one of the Qur'anic Botanic Garden plants and checked the vital measurements of the seeds, using the optical microscope in shooting the images of the samples by themselves and executing all the laboratory activities in a proactive step from the Qur'anic Botanic Garden towards the rehabilitation of these students to be the researchers of future.
The Qur'anic Botanic Garden, member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and the Community Development, targets the secondary school students through its educational program the "Young Botanist", a scientific and practical program at the same time that aims to introduce high school students with the basics of "monitoring and evaluation of the plant’s life in the desert areas". The program, also, aims to protect the natural resources by raising the educational level of the principles of conservation and ways of protection among students, as well as promoting the student skills of the scientific research and the transfer of scientific and research expertise to them so that they can choose the practical field that best suits their skills and abilities.
