Camphor

Camphor originated in Asia. It is grown on a large scale in China and Japan to extract the volatile camphor substance from all parts of the plant. The used part of camphor is a white or transparent wax substance. Camphor available in markets is a solid substance in the form of white crystals or white contiguous square blocks. It is highly volatile even in normal room temperature. Muslims use camphor in shrouding the dead.Camphor – 9882

Camphor is mentioned in this hadith reported on the authority of Um-‘Atiyyah Al-Ansariyyah, may Allah be pleased with her, who said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, came to us when his daughter died. He said, “Wash her three or five times, or more if you deem it necessary, with water and sidr (lote-tree) then apply camphor at the end. When you finish, inform me.” She said, “When we finished, we informed him. He gave us his waist-sheet and said, “Shroud her in it.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, The Book of Funerals)
